Ask Others

Ever since we launched the gallery feature, we had been waiting for the weekend for a team-party. Being the product manager, it was my duty to organize the party.

I am not aware of the best restaurant that will suit the demands of all team members, so I posted the this question in "Ask Others " section of CommonFloor - "Which is the best restaurant near Suncity, that will serve us Chinese cuisine and should have a dessert option nearby. Proximity to a punjabi restaurant will be a plus, in case mood changes at the last moment which usually happens?"

Thankfully, I got 3 replies within an hour about "Yo-China" restaurant near Marathalli. One helpful neighbor (Sumit) also pointed out that it is near to Innovative Multiplex. I made a quick visit to Weekend Guide and found movies running in Innovative Multiplex so as to book tickets for the team!

Now, I am looking forward towards Sunday for the party!

"Ask Others" is a great feature to quickly get locality level information from neighbors and residents around a locality are the best sources to get real reviews. Try it out and tell us how can we improve it further!

Bangalore Police says "Hello Neighbour"

With the advent of urbanization, people are loosing contact even with their immediate neighbors. In a city like Bangalore, criminals are taking advantage of anonymity and lack of proper neighborhood feeling. Hence neighborhood watch scheme was introduced in Bangalore City by the Police.

As a step further, a new scheme called "Hello Neighbour" movement is being introduced by the Bangalore Police, all over the city.

You can read more about the objective at: http://www.bcp.gov.in/english/proactivepolicing/HN.html

So, to get a better life and a happier tomorrow, say hello to your neighbor.

Your Apartment - Your Event - Your Photos

It's a well known proverb, "A picture is worth a thousand words". Events within apartment community are great way to celebrate and know each other. Photos and videos are prefect way to store and recollect experience. It is even great to share celebration photographs with each other to have a still larger collection.

This are photographs from Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations at Suncity Corporate Leisure, Bangalore:

At CommonFloor, one of our main aim is to facilitate collaboration between residents. Thus, we are very excited to announce the gallery feature at CommonFloor. You can create albums for each individual event and everyone who has clicked a photo can upload it for everyone to recall their happy moments.

Try it out and tell us what you think. We'd love to hear from you!

How CommonFloor can help in professional networking.

Managers today juggle more responsibilities than ever and for many of them networking becomes an afterthought.
“Other things being equal, what is going to give you an edge? It’s the relationships that you have that allow you to augment what you know and allow you to take the ‘what you know’ and actually to translate it into practice, into something the organization can use. It makes all the difference.” - Herminia Ibarra, INSEAD Professor of Organisational Behaviour.

Three types of networks

There are three types of networks important in business: operational, personal and strategic.

While a lot of managers excel at building and using their operational network, they often overlook their personal and strategic networks.

Operational networking involves cultivating the relationships with people you need to accomplish your job, like people and colleagues at work.

Personal networking is an afterthought for many busy managers. When you work 60-80 hour weeks, the easiest thing to eliminate from your schedule is neighborhood social event, your alumni meet etc.

Strategic networking is the toughest but most essential if managers want to become business leaders. Managers are encouraged to look beyond their industry as well. This allows managers to share ideas about best practices in management, learn new approaches and keep close tabs on developments in business and technology. It helps managers to see the bigger picture and create their own visionary approach.

CommonFloor allows you to meet a diverse group of like-minded professionals, living in geographic proximity. Socializing this way helps you to develop important social skills for many professionals and may be the first place you turn when you start thinking about changing careers.

Commonfloor Team Day - Bangalore

To mark my 12th day* at commonfloor, we had a team outing in Bangalore, complete with pizzas, pani-puri, bhelpuri, chocolates, cakes and my favorite - juices. After hitting the streets for 20 minutes, we reached an extremely beautiful place and spend some 3 hours there.

The 5 of us (Lalit, Sumit, Mitanshu, Satya, Vikas) waiting for Dominoes pizzas! A good start with pizzas prepares a good base for the day.

Its raining! Rains with regular breaks(read: photo sessions) puts (slippery) cheese on the base.

Baking the base for optimum time is very important for a good preparation. We at commonfloor believes in having good fun in the sunlight that follows the rains!

One step leads to the other. Putting the vegetable and sausages on the pizza is the next step. Put the pizza for baking quickly so as to satisfy the hunger and greed!

Congratulations: The final pizza is ready:

Discover the hassle free world around you with Commonfloor

Could you have ever imagined knowing your neighbors would be so easy and just a click away? Yes, I am talking about CommonFloor, a internet based service targeted to make life in apartments easier. If you live in residential communities and you have not heard of Commonfloor, then, you are really missing out the fun filled world provided by Commonfloor. Commonfloor (CF), a free web-based product, offered by maxHeap Technologies, creates online space for the residents of an apartment complex to enhance their societal interaction. Every feature of Commonfloor is targeted towards making your life better and simpler.

How many times have you wanted to do these things but stepped back due to the given reason.

  • Badly wanted to ask for something from someone in your locality but were too hesitant to ask, however in need you might have been.
  • Wanted to form a club of your interest but you did not know how to find people who share same interests.
  • Were feeling too tired to cook. Just wished if you could order your favorite food from some place but you never had time to explore your locality and were not aware of places to order from.
  • Wanted to explore your neighborhood but you were too tired after coming back from office or too occupied to have some time out for the same.

You do not have to wait for any long, with Commonfloor all these things are just a mouse click away. The moment you log in to Commonfloor you get to know the people from your native. You can list whatever you want; you can list whatever you have to sell. You can search for the restaurants offering your favorite cuisine according to your willingness to spend. You can form a club related to your interest or may be such a group already exists! There is a “local info” feature offered by commonfloor, you can check out events happening in your city, classifieds, recommended services and offers/deals you may become glad looking at. I am sure you will find some or other thing there which will intrigue you.

We see so many products in the web space but few of them add value to our daily lives but Commonfloor is a very basic product providing solutions to day to day problems of people living in residential communities. In terms of usability and user friendliness I would rate Commonfloor as ten on ten.

I bet if there is anything which concerns your life related to your residential community, it is already offered by Commonfloor or will be a feature of it as the product evolves with more people using and giving their feedback. Already it is being used by hundreds of apartment buildings in Bangalore. May be your apartment is already using Commonfloor! Register to Commonfloor of your apartment by getting your activation code from your apartment association at http://www.commonfloor.com/register. If your apartment complex is not yet on CommonFloor, get it listed at http://www.CommonFloor.com/contactus/get-listed. After using commonfloor, I feel there could not have been a better way of exploring my neighborhood.

Redefining Apartment Societies in Cyberspace

Social networks have been around us in the form of Orkut, Facebook and LinkedIn; touching our social interaction in cyberspace and helping us bridge the gaps in our social and professional life. At a time when the social networking space is seeing lot of innovations, MaxHeap has come up with this great idea of introducing social networks in high rise apartment societies. While most social networks have a great emphasis on third degree contacts like friend-of-friend or colleague-of-colleague, CommonFloor the social networking brainchild of MaxHeap, is all about knowing your next door neighbor. But to restrict it to just a social contact directory would be to undermine the usability of a great resouce portal. At Commonfloor knowing your next door neighbor (and the hundreds others who share your apartment complex) is about knowing people who share the same physical, social and economical space in the society as you do.

So where LinkedIn can serve as a great place to form contacts with peers who might help you drive your professional life and Facebook or Orkut can help you reunite with old friends, CommonFloor can find you golf partner, bridge players, trekking enthusiasts or your local morning laughter club. On one hand forming a club around your favorite past time is an incentive to some, having something as practical as a car-pool will be a lucrative idea for most, attractive even more when CommonFloor provides you with all the tools to manage your groups, find new members, add them and call for meetings, suggestions and much more ... just a CLICK away.

But hey!! City life is not just about you and your neighbors having a good time ... there are always a bunch of things at home and other than work that you want to do and CommonFloor can help you achieve. CommonFloor also acts as a Concierge provider by helping you with your daily chores like electricity bills, phone bills, movie tickets and mails. You can also ask for domestic help, maintainence work and keep track of your queries online. When was the last time you were looking for "saboodane ki khichdi" and did not know where to find "saboodane" or worst of all ... what recipie to use ? Why wait but ask for tips from your neighbors using CommonFloor.

CommonFloor today is trying to cater to every need of working professionals and their families living in huge apartment socities. It is coming with tools and technologies to enable you to make your life full circle even from your office desk. The latest additions in its kitty of products is local search, local news, shopping offers, food services and movie rentals from 70mm.com.

This is all but the start of the story, to know CommonFloor more you need to get registered (which is free as in free beer) to the portal alongwith your neighbours in your housing society. This and a lot of upcoming stuff is going to make CommonFloor the next revolution in online space which is going to make our offline life easier and more fun. Just dont forget to check the demo out here.

CommonFloor

Home is where you are 'at home'- an experience you always seem to be familiar with- a flair that beckons you back to your roots. CommonFloor is simply that open courtyard of your building where from you are connected to all fellowmen you are living with. Wise or otherwise, these are all your neighbors who chose a lifestyle similar to yours.
